Physiotherapy

CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPISTS – MUSCULO-SKELETAL.

Physiotherapists are qualified to diagnose and treat musculo-skeletal conditions, which means anything to do with bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and connective tissues. We take into consideration your specific body type, posture, lifestyle and other environmental factors which may be contributing to your problem.

We will assess what happened to cause the pain or injury by asking relevant questions, and giving you time to discuss anything you feel is important. Key clues to an accurate diagnosis can be gained here.

The physical assessment will involve analysis of factors related to your body type, and the area in question. We may also test areas of the body other than the painful area, as sometimes pain can be referred, or may be related to problems or weakness further up, or down the body.

We will discuss the findings of the assessment, what it means, an expected timescale of recovery, and give you time to ask any questions. A treatment plan; and specific exercise program will be devised. Treatment is normally hands on, we do not believe in plugging patients into machines, our therapists use their brains and hands on skills. Both of our Physiotherapists may use manual therapy, sports massage and myo-fascial release techniques as part of their treatments.

If we diagnose a simple muscular strain we will discuss whether you wish to continue treatment with a physiotherapist or be seen by one of our Sports Massage Therapists. Most people will benefit from a physiotherapy assessment, it is always good to understand your problem, and what you can do for yourself, but we also understand that many conditions will benefit from hands on therapy, and want you to receive the most cost efficient way of getting better.

The goal of treatment is to resolve your problem wherever possible, and give you the knowledge to prevent or minimise reoccurrence. On the rare occasions we diagnose a problem that we do not believe will respond to Physiotherapy, we will discuss this with you, and where appropriate can liaise with your GP regarding on going NHS referral, or privately, if you are insured, or wish to pay for a private referral.

Our Physiotherapists are accepted by most major Insurers.

Chartered Physiotherapist – Womens Health / Pelvic Floor Specialist.

Many women (and some men) will experience bladder problems at some point in life. For women, child birth is an obvious cause, but for men and women, all sorts of other things can be relevant, such as previous surgery, lifestyle factors, body type, your job, and simply weakening of an ageing muscle.

Having a strong, healthy pelvic floor is also vital to normal trunk and core stability, and improves bladder control, body awareness and sexual enjoyment for men and women. The pelvic floor are a group of muscles and our Physiotherapist will de-mystify the anatomy, function, and guide you in re-connecting with this often forgotten muscle.

Our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist also offers sessions for women without any specific problem, but wishing to understand more about their anatomy in a safe and supportive environment. Rachel has patients from all cultures and backgrounds, and is respectful towards cultural differences, whilst providing women with accurate information about their bodies. For one person this may simply be an education session with anatomy models, or another may involve an examination, and specific exercise/ treatment program.

If your Physiotherapist believes an assessment of your Pelvic Floor is indicated this will be discussed with you, and full explained. Many women find it useful to have some feedback on whether they are actually contracting the Pelvic Floor. After child birth, pelvic trauma, or surgery there may be areas of damage or weakness, just like any other muscle.

Men’s Health

Men can also suffer with incontinence, prostate problems and age related weakness of the pelvic floor. Rachel has worked with men pre and post prostate surgery, to help them regain bladder control and maximise independence.

There are many clinical studies proving the efficacy of Physiotherapy for the Pelvic Floor for men and women with incontinence. Understanding your anatomy, and a tailored exercise program to strengthen your pelvic floor correctly can really improve outcomes.
